First Ever: Nantucket Holidays for Heroes
VFW Benefit -- Heroes On Vacation
A small portion of the new VFW building on Nantucket decorated for the first-ever Nantucket “Holidays for Heroes” benefit on Sept. 13, 2013. Thanks to all who participated in any way -- it was a great success and there was plenty of fun to be had by all !!!
Lee Greenwood: "God Bless the USA"
Lee Greenwood Performs for Heroes Benefit
Country music star Lee Greenwood performed for a crowd of 350 at the Benefit. Written and recorded by Greenwood, the patriotic hit “God Bless the USA” was released in 1984, then regained its popularity during the Gulf War. Greenwood’s performance factored greatly in the event’s resounding success, and was thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance. The sold-out venue was generously hosted by the Nantucket VFW.
Nantucket Welcomes Disabled Vets and Families
The Island hosted four disabled Vets and their families here for a few days during the festivities, which included a Figawi race, Meet-and-Greet with Heroes, and exciting fishing excursions on some of the local charter boats. The activities culminated with a banquet provided by E.J. Harvey and accompanied by Lee Greenwood performing “God Bless the USA”, and silent and live auctions, courtesy of Tommy Bressette, Auctioneer.

According to their website, Holidays for Heroes is a National Campaign Honoring Our Heroes. Thousands of men and women haven given their all in defense of the liberties America holds so dear.
“I sat in awe of these brave and very young soldiers who were being honored for their bravery and all they do/did to keep our country free. It was very emotional. And as I thought about how truly lucky we all are I was inspired to start Holidays for Heroes.”
